The Emporia Arts Center is hosting the ESU Art Student “Salon des Refusés” in the Trusler Gallery from April 2 through April 27, 2019.
Every year, the ESU Department of Art holds a Juried Exhibition for all students currently enrolled in art classes. Each student is allowed to enter up to 3 pieces. An outside juror thoroughly looks over all of the pieces and selects the works that he/she considers to be the most excellent. The selected pieces are then displayed in the ESU galleries as a part of the “Annual Juried Student Exhibition”. The pieces that were not selected by the juror are taken to the Emporia Arts Center to be in the “Salon des Refusés”.
Salon des Refusés is French for “exhibition of rejects”. The tradition of exhibiting works of art that were refused by a juror dates back to Paris in 1863. A juror’s selections can be very subjective, and often the art that isn’t selected is just as amazing as the art that is selected.
All exhibitions in the Trusler Gallery of the Emporia Arts Center are free to the public.
Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
