Echoes of the Plains consists of mixed media sculptures that serve as visual memoirs, capturing abstract images of farmland and agricultural practices. Rooted from David’s autobiographical memories from his upbringing in rural Kansas, his sculptures reflect his experiences and environment.
David has been an advocate for art education – serving as a Kansas Artist-in-Education and teaching art in Emporia schools. In retirement, he continues to share his passion for ceramics through teaching classes at the Emporia Art Center and promoting art in the community.
Don’t miss Steve Barnard’s “Visions of Variety,” on display until September 28th! Swing by to see his unique illustrative artwork in the Trusler Gallery.

This month in the Trusler Gallery we have American Cheese: The Nick Geankoplis Show. This show is a blend of classical gallery mixed with installation. Nick blends his knowledge of utilitarian ceramics with the ideas of abstract ceramic sculpture. The result is a colorful display of the known figures that clay can be formed into alongside the more fluid idea that it can become more.
This is a wonderful presentation by Nick who is the current Head of the Ceramics Department at K-State University. He has taught and shown nationally and internationally. All of his works pull from the experiences he has had over the past two decades of exploration in the ceramic world.
On Display: May 2nd – June 1st | Free to the public Artist Reception: May 3rd | 4:00-6:00pm

New in the Trusler Gallery: A.L. Redden – Left Under the Surface
February 1st – 24th · Artist Reception: February 2nd 4-6pm
Amy Redden is a high school English Teacher in the Kansas City Metro Area. While she has never had formal lessons or training, art has always been her solace and a way to express herself. From illustrating her poetry collection Hindsight to creating cards and stickers, Amy has enjoyed creating things. To her, creation is as essential as breathing.
For her debut show, Left Under the Surface, Amy chose to create a singular feeling, rather than a concrete object. This show focuses on what we cannot say or what has gone unsaid. Whether it is a look, a silence, or an absence, we have all left things unsaid. Combining watercolor, gold leaf, and poetry, this collection explores all the times we have remained silent.
Amy hopes that you enjoy the pieces as much as she has, and that this would be an encouragement to be bold enough to be honest.
Are you a veteran or know a veteran that would like to be a part of our Veterans Glass Blowing Workshop that is happening this Friday? You will get a chance to work with glass blowing artist, April Lemon, and learn how to blow/form glass.
This is an amazing experience that we want you to be a part of! We only have 7 slots left! If you are interested contact Sarah Bulinski at sbulinski@emporiaksarts.org by Thursday.
